What Does "Glueless" Even Mean in the World of Wigs?

If you're anything like me, you've probably clicked on a website excitedly expecting that a "glueless" wig means exactly what it sounds like—a wig that can be installed without any glue. Seems straightforward, right? The name itself suggests simplicity and convenience, especially for beginners. However, the reality often falls short of these expectations. In fact, many wigs marketed as "glueless" are far from it.

Take a closer look at the world of wig influencers, and you'll notice a trend that can be quite misleading. You'll often see influencers promoting a "glueless" wig, only to watch them reach for a bottle of glue and start applying it to their forehead to secure the wig. This raises the question: what does "glueless" really mean?

The Misconception Around Glueless Wigs

Now don't get me wrong, there is nothing overtly wrong with using adhesives to tie down a wig.  Like any product, if used correctly, it can minimize any damage, like in this case to your edges or skin irritation.  On the flipside, if used incorrectly, these adhesives can cause serious breakage or irritated skin.  But let's think about the core demographic of glueless shoppers.  It's beginners!  Beginners typically do not have the knowledge and/or experience of working with different adhesives and knowing how to apply it correctly.  Therefore, the chance of error typically becomes greater.

Which leads us to the real grumble about this overused and misused wig category.  It is used to capture the attention of beginners but this problem is that when the attention is successfully grabbed and beginners buy these wigs, they are then left to fend for themselves with a wig that does not look like the one on the model in the pictures.

What these customers don't realize is that the models in the photos most likely did not simply put on the wig and then the photographer snapped the photo right away.  Most of these models and influencers end up doing a lot more to their wig to make it look "flawless".  Again, there is nothing wrong about sprucing up your wig if you have the knowledge.  But it's the false advertising of "this is what you get out of the box" that gives the industry a bad taste.

What Should You Expect from a True Glueless Wig?

At Styied, we are beginner-focused, which means everything we do is to address the needs of beginners using our wigs.  Our first goal was to simplify the installation process.  Which is why we don't call it an install.  We describe it as simply "putting on the wig".  Because that's what you think/expect when you see "Glueless/Ready-to-Wear" wigs.  We have done everything to customize your wig so that when you receive your wig, you can truly put on your wig and go with a beautiful style and without adhesive if you choose to do so.  The option to use an adhesive or gel should be a CHOICE, not a NECESSITY.

As the wig industry continues to grow, it’s essential for both consumers and brands to demand transparency. Wigs are a significant investment, and buyers deserve to know exactly what they’re getting. While there’s nothing wrong with a wig that requires glue, labeling it as "glueless" when it’s not is misleading and can lead to frustration, especially for beginners. Achieving a flawless look might still take a little effort, but with the right product, you’ll be able to do it without the need for glue.
