Black Wigs, White Wigs: Different Lingo, Basically Same S***
Share
If you read my other post "Wigs for Different Races: Marketing Strategy or Real Need?", you probably have a good understanding of where I stand on this separation. In continuing my research and looking at countless websites and social media pages, I realized that wigs marketed for white women used different terms than I was used to but were basically the exact same thing. Below are some of the common terms that I have seen used and if they are really reserved for a specific race.
Monofilament Wigs:
A single monofilament wig refers to a type of wig construction where the wig cap has a monofilament section, typically at the crown or parting area. The monofilament material is a fine, breathable mesh made from nylon or polyester that closely mimics the appearance of a natural scalp. Individual hairs are hand-tied into the mesh, creating a natural look where the hair appears to grow directly from the scalp.
Lace Closure Wigs:
Lace closure wigs are a type of wig that features a lace closure—a small piece of lace fabric with individual hair strands hand-tied to it. The lace closure is typically rectangular or square in shape and measures around 4x4 inches, 5x5 inches, or 6x6 inches. It is placed at the front portion of the wig, covering the crown and front hairline area.
Let's Dive into Differences & Similarities:
- Firstly, the materials are obviously different. One is lace and one is made out of nylon or polyester.
- You don't see a band or clips in the first picture but nowadays most monofilament wigs come with these added accessories for a secure fit.
- Both monofilament and lace wigs vary in their coverage areas. They can provide full coverage or partial coverage like you see in both photos.
In Conclusion:
- Both of these wig types typically come in a lighter tint. This is why people with darker shades put makeup or a mousse tint on their wig cap and lace to make it match their skin tone/scalp.
- As far as sensitivity, most people wear a wig cap underneath their lace wig which is typically made out of nylon or polyester for a more comfortable fit anyways.
- No matter your race, lace wigs tend to offer a more realistic hairline and parting scalp.
Toppers:
Are hair accessories designed to cover thinning areas or bald spots on the scalp, providing extra volume and fullness to natural hair. Unlike full wigs that cover the entire head, toppers are used to blend with existing hair, integrating with the wearer's natural hair for a more voluminous appearance.
If you look up toppers, you will mostly find the textures and color catering to white women, however, there are more and more companies marketing to men and offering different textures of hair in the past few years.
Closures:
Are hairpieces designed to create a natural-looking part or hairline in wigs and weaves. They are used to close off a hairstyle, blending with natural hair or covering the scalp to give a seamless and realistic appearance.
If you look up closure, you will mostly find this accessory catering to almost exclusively black women, however, especially on social media you will find stylists that use closures on different types of ethnicities.
Let's Dive into Differences & Similarities:
- Toppers can be made out of the monofilament material or even lace. Whereas closures are always going to be lace or silk (lace being the most popular).
- A topper that blends in with your unique texture and color may be difficult to find.
In Conclusion:
- If you are wanting to change up your hairstyle and have some fun with your hair, choosing a closure on a wig or weave may be your best option for more versatility.
- No matter your race, choosing between a topper and a closure depends on your preference of installation, versatility, and coverage.
What This All Means:
Depending on the material of monofilament wigs, customizing it to fit a darker skin tone may be difficult which is why they may not be marketed towards black women as much.
In saying that, understand that any race can rock a lace wig and customize it to their skin tone and hairline for a natural look. Whether you do a full wig or a closure wig is up to you. When it comes to comfortability, adding a wig cap underneath your lace can help you achieve that same feeling as wearing a monofilament wig.
